Dems Enter A Drama-Free Zone

It’ll be interesting to see if Democrats convention get a bump from their convention, or if in fact anybody’ll watch.

For better or worse, it’s unlikely to provide much drama: the party is about as united as it’ll ever be, they’ve got some decent entertainment lined up, and they’ve worked hard to provide a diverse array of anti-Trump speakers, from AOC to Mike Bloomberg, Bernie Sanders to John Kasich.

The question is whether anyone will care?

Trump will be holding rallies during the convention. Though he’s unlikely to say anything he hasn’t said before — he’s limited in his repertoire and his vocabulary, in case you hadn’t noticed — he’ll drive his cult crazy and distract the media by making up facts and sneering at Democrats.

Democrats could hire well-know comics to roast selected clips. A Democratic audience would love them and the media would replay them. But they won’t.

Democrats haven’t even hinted at the possibility of a surprise, whatever it might be.

It’s unfortunate, but Democrats have been painfully earnest for decades. Unlike their Republican counterparts like Richard Nixon, George W. Bush, and especially Donald Trump, they are very predictable. While many of their show business supporters are irreverent, Democrats tend to be politically correct. Unless there are technical glitches or Joe Biden starts riffing, the convention is unlikely to have many un-scripted moments.

There’s a lot to be said for that. But dramatic it’s not.
