It's Your Party, Joe. Legalize Pot.

John Belushi has been making the rounds on television promoting his marijuana growing and distribution business. Every demographic smokes pot. Many Democrats, including Chuck Schumer, have called for its legalization.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris should join the party. Promise that their administration will legalize weed. And do it now, before Trump steals the idea from them.

Biden has already called for weed’s decriminalization. But that’s not as strong as legalization.

Legalization could grab the attention of libertarians, including those who are already in the marijuana business. It could get young people wasted on pot to get off the couch to vote.

It would be good for business. It could revitalize America’s agricultural industry and give small farmers a chance to compensate for Trump’s destructive trade policies.

Legalization of marijuana would make it a lot easier for researchers to investigate its medical properties. It would provide another option — perhaps many options — for ailing patients who have been failed by traditional medicine.

Making pot legal would also take away a criminal charge that police enforce arbitrarily, unnecessarily, sometimes brutally, and with extreme prejudice against African-Americans.

By calling for legalization, the Biden/Harris ticket would come across as strong, energetic, and flexible enough to change his mind and evolve to meet the moment. Trump’s attacks on Biden’s vitality may be unwarranted, but they have an impact. Associating with young people would counter that perception.

While he’s at it, Joe might promise to release everyone in federal jails on marijuana charges. Many people are concerned about over-incarceration. This would be a specific and positive way to address the issues.

Pot may not be as benign as some people say. But keeping it a criminal offense doesn’t help anyone. The legal netherworld of decriminalization isn’t a hell of a lot better. It can certainly be regulated as easily as alcohol.

The campaign has a choice: Play it safe and bland. Or energize your base.

Legalizing marijuana isn’t a pipe dream. It could give the Democrats the kick they need going into these last weeks of the campaign.
