Open Letter to Dan Coats and Other Silent Republicans

Former Senator and Director of National Intelligence has been obliquely critically of Donald Trump and his administration.  It’s not enough. He and others who served in the administration should be forthright and speak loudly and publicly about the threat the re-election of Donald Trump poses to this country.

This letter calls upon them to do their patriotic duty and speak out. Feel free to copy and share.

Dear Senator,

For the preservation of our country, you must speak publicly - and ideally under oath - about the shady, perhaps criminal, practices of the Trump Administration.

Over the past few days, the President has made clear that he will not commit to respecting the sanctity of our upcoming election.  He’s undermining faith in our democratic processes - as he has virtually all government institutions. He’s openly telling the public what he’s doing to rig the election. We have to take him seriously, not least because he undoubtedly has the backing of Vladimir Putin.

Your proposal for a bipartisan commission to monitor the election was welcome and wise. But it’s unlikely to be workable by November 3.  Indeed, if it were workable Trump would surely work to discredit it.

Speaking to Bob Woodward is not enough.  You and Generals Mattis and Kelly must tell in unequivocal terms what you saw and what you know.  You should speak before Congress and go on the evening news show.

We may be witnessing the end of our democracy.  We are certainly witnessing the end of our decency.

You can help save us.  As a patriot, you have a duty to protect and preserve the nation.

For the sake of our nation’s freedom, please speak out.

Thank you.
