Turning Reality Upside Down

Every day in a million way Donald Trump and his influencers (quite likely including the Russians) work to create the reality in which half of America lives.

Vaccines are tools of evil in the murderous hands of Dr. Anthony Fauci; Joe Biden is a fascist murderer; Hunter Biden is a criminal mastermind; Nancy Pelosi is Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS; and George Soros is the Nazi puupet-master who runs the world-wide conspiracy against the one true America.

The January 6 insurrectionists were tourists, exuberant lovers of America, or innocents caught in a diabolical web created by secret-president Biden and Hillary’s pizza-slinging pedophiles. They were patriotic Trump supporters, dupes set up by the FBI, or Antifa in MAGA clothing.

That guy who shit on Nancy Pelosi’s desk? He was just showing his appreciation for her great work. The folks who beat and choked cops? Just showing their love. The Republican Congressmen who cowered or barricaded themselves in the House chamber? They know nothing, saw nothing, and heard nothing.

To hear them tell it, America is in a state of collapse.  We’re in the throes of the highest unemployment of all time; our economy is in a shambles; criminals, largely made up of an army of dark-skinned immigrants, have overrun our cities; and the FBI, the judiciary, and environmental agencies are the Gestapo.

A team of Hollywood screenwriters couldn’t come up with the diabolical scenarios in which so many have placed their faith. Yet a quick perusal of Twitter shows that many not only believe the most outrageous ideas, they disseminate them and serve as Trump campaign surrogates.  Often, they embellish the misinformation, in a competitive frenzy to top each others’ rhetoric.

They pounce on every bit of trivia that can bolster their case that only one man can save America.  They are the resistance against the power-mad Democrats.  They are the soldiers of freedom who will exterminate those that dare to disagree.

It’s not clear that the Biden campaign and its allies understand the breadth and depth of the problem.  Even less clear is what steps the they are taking to fighting back.

But the approach they’re taking - incessantly trumpeting Biden’s achievements to Americans who refuse - or can’t - hear them is bound to fail.

If they don’t start fighting back with dramatic and comprehensive new approaches, they’re going to lose this election and Americans will lose their country.
