All Heart, No Brains.
Joe Biden has a great heart. But it’s become increasingly clear that it’s not matched by his head.
Biden may be able to lead the country. He’d certainly be better than his Republican opponent. But his campaign has been a slow-moving disaster - long before the debate made clear that his infirmities render him unable to compete with Trump.
Joe ran for office in 2020 with the promise of being a “transitional president.” It’s understandable now that he wants to finish the job he’s started. He’s done well. Arguably great. But if he fails to win he could bring his party - and the country - down with him.
The hearts of many Democrats are with him. But nostalgia won’t win this election. He wanted to unite the country, but he’s become a polarizing, even hated, figure. It’s not fair or warranted, but it’s reality.
Choosing a new candidate will be politically and logistically difficult. But for months it’s been evident that Democrats needed a dramatic turn of events to turn momentum in their direction.
If Biden could take control of his narrative he would have done so months it even years ago. But he’s consistently lost support since the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. He’s pretty much at rock bottom for a candidate now.
Maybe a short, exciting nominating process could make the Democratic convention worth watching, and result in a candidate who’ll keep Biden’s voters and siphon enough from the middle to achieve victory.
