Can Kamala Change Minds On Immigration?
The only aliens taking over America are the ones in Donald Trump’s head.
But many Americans are living in abject terror of dark people taking their jobs, raping and killing with impunity, and eating their pets.
It’s a fake issue. There haven’t been major cultural shifts in most of the country. But after years of anti-immigrant hysteria many Americans believe Trump and not their own eyes.
Xenophobia is not a new phenomenon. Immigration and cultural assimilation have been controversial in America for more than two centuries. Most people don’t know this dark side of our history. The Irish, Italians, the Jews, and the Chinese faced discrimination and even violence against their presence.
But few Americans have historical perspective. Thry are convinced that the country has been taken over by malignant forces of dark people.
Many Republicans in the business community know better. Immigrants are a vital component of the American economy. The farming, food processing, and the hospitality industries couldn’t exist without immigrants to do the jobs native-born Americans don’t do.
It’s probably too late to introduce facts or offer perspective to alter the public’s perception that immigration is an existential problem. But Democrats could certainly do a lot better job of correcting the myths spread by Republicans and their allies in the media. They can make Republicans work a lot harder to get away with their lies and plant seeds of doubt in the minds of swing voters.
Once again, Harris and Walz have to promise a vision of the future, a plan, so to speak, the basis of which is the bipartisan border security/immigration legislation that Trump killed.
But pitch it as a plan, not legislation. There’s a wsy forward, that builds on our heritage as a welcoming haven AND assures our prosperity.
Get rid of Trump and the controversy and the problems go away.
