Trump Is A Moving Target...

Maybe Biden should be too.

If Donald Trump were a normal candidate, he’d be easy to attack.  Democrats could oppose him on his record, his views, and his policy proposals.

But he throws out policy ideas - some of them occasionally clever or interesting - almost at random, with no consistency, often contradictory, or at odds with his previous statements.

Attacking him is like attacking the wind.  It's here, and then gone.  He can easily deny what he’s said or done, and if he’s caught in a contradiction his cult doesn’t know or care if he’s lying or hypocritical.

As George Costanza said to Jerry Seinfeld, "It's not a lie if you believe it."  At any given moment, Trump believes what he says.  And then his stream-of-consciousness moves on.

Biden could never be Trump. He’s a conventional politician, fairly consistent, espousing views and policies that have evolved over years.

He’s be a lot more interesting, and attractive, if he were less predictable and threw out an occasional surprise  - especially in a debate format.  Trump may be a great bullshit artist who can talk his way out of anything, but he’s not deep or agile.  He wouldn't respond well - or even understand - a surprise.

New policies or even a clever non sequitur from Biden would throw Trump for a loop.  And more important, would get the attention of the media.  A surprise announcement would capture the spin cycle after a debate and would be endlessly repeated afterwards.

Some ideas:

* Pardoning low-level drug offenders or better, legalizing marijuana.
* A new policy to bring down prices on groceries.
* Shutting down the southern border - while keeping our humanitarian tradition of taking in the persecuted and downtrodden.
* Proposing loans to small businesses.
* Loan forgiveness, or at least refinancing, for small businesses, farms and homeowners.
* A renewal of teaching civics and the three r's in school.

These are just suggestions.  They don't have to be immediately implementable, but they should be expressed as part of a bright vision for America's future.

No one can really "win" a debate with Trump.  The main goal is to trump him.

It's long past time for Democrats to realize that.
