Start Promoting Your Bench, Dems

Given that Joe Biden’s age is a serious concern of the American public, Democrats should begin floating the names of possible candidates should his campaign falter or he’s unable to serve.

Of course, they shouldn’t undermine Biden.  But it would remind America that Biden has a deep bench of leaders who are ready and more than able to to serve.

Some obvious choices are political figures:  Gavin Newsom probably leads the pack, possibly followed by Gretchen Whitmer, Amy Klobuchar and Sherrod Brown.  While there are a number of promising figures in Congress, none has the stature or star power to immediately challenge Donald Trump.  It’s hard to see anyone in the business world having a broad range of appeal among Dems or the general public.

But if Democrats want to find figures who are more greatly respected than Trump, they should look to the military.  Three names come immediately to mind: retired Generals Mark Milley and Stanley McCrystal, and Admiral William McRaven.  The Republican slur machine can probably dig up dirt on them, but all three seem to be problem-solvers with extraordinary military service  and public policy records that would be acceptable to most Democrats.

Most important, they have unblemished records of loyalty and service to this country.

Let Republicans Trump that.
