Welcome to WinningBlue, a blog dedicated to Democratic branding and public relations strategies.
For months, Donald Trump has taken credit whenever financial markets rise.
He knows it’s a leading indicator of economic growth, it makes people feel the country is on the right track, and it builds financial security for the 60% of the country invested in the markets.
Democrats, on the other hand, seem to incapable of taking credit for the country’s continued recovery from Trump’s recession. It’s not clear why. But this can’t be a winning strategy.
“I will cut the price of ENERGY and ELECTRICITY in HALF within 12 months. We will seriously expedite our environmental approvals, and quickly double our electricity capacity. This will DRIVE DOWN INFLATION, and make AMERICA and MICHIGAN the best place on earth to build a factory….” - Donald Trump, Twitter, October 10, 2024
It’s complete nonsense, but Kamala should learn from him - and fast.
It’s almost inconceivable that so many people, and especially younger people, still can’t decide who they’ll support for president.
They say they don’t know or trust her, don’t know her policies or what she’ll do as president.
The right-wing slime machine has done a great job of putting doubt in the heads of even moderate voters. But Kamala hasn’t helped herself like she should.
The debate for Vice President probably won’t move the needle for the Harris campaign, which leaves the race razor tight - and Democrats probably behind in the swing states that will determine the winner of the Electoral College.
WinningBlue has argued for months that the Democratic campaigns for President must take dramatic steps to swing the momentum in their favor.
With only a month left, the urgency to generate excitement in the electorate is greater than ever.
No one knows if Donald Trump has any core beliefs besides his own self-interest, but his supporters certainly believe his bullshit about a dystopian America in decline.
Despite all evidence to the contrary, they believe his lies, share his cynicism, and are willing to disavow decency, overthrow our government, and forsake their friends and families for an utterly corrupt dictator who despises America’s history and will gaslight us to destruction.
By contrast, Kamala is reality-based, and that reality holds the promise for our continued greatness.
People often wonder how a degenerate scumbag like Donald Trump is doing so well against Democrats.
The headline above says it all. After the Federal Reserve lowered interest rates for the first time in years, essentially signaling an end to inflation and a return to a normal economy, the financial markets soared to record-breaking heights.
But rather than taking credit for successfully navigating out of the crisis Trump left us, Democrats apparently decided that the best communications strategy was silence.
Israel’s three - or four - front war isn’t helping Kamala Harris’s electoral chances.
The left’s seething anger could cost her Michigan. The right, which doesn’t need reasons to blast the Biden administration, blames it for the chaos in the Middle East and Iran’s imminent nuclear capabilities. The middle doesn’t like uncertainty and may turn to Trump for steadier leadership. While the Biden administration has restored America‘s leadership role in international affairs, domestically it’s seemed passive or reactive to world events.
If he can present Israel and the world with positive options, Joe Biden might still be able to alter this domestic perception.
Kamala Harris’s seemingly offhand remark about guns the other week was an interesting attempt to reach reasonable gun owners.
But like so many Democratic public relations efforts, it was probably ineffective.
Trump’s economic policies are nothing more than non-sequiturs that don’t stand up to scrutiny. But they're easily memorizable and repeatable and satisfying in their simplicity.
Trump has the advantage of building on myths that Republicans have promulgated for decades., most notably railing about regulations. Unfortunately, Tim Walz didn’t do much to explain or refute this idea in his debate last night. But it underlies much of the REpublican offensive against Democrats.
Since there’s not enough time for Democrats to thoroughly debunk Trump’s “plans,” the only chance for the Harris campaign is to simplify their plans to counter his message.

Interviews with undecided voters suggest that Kamala is still failing to reach them. Their comments suggest a certain distrust or lack of faith in her sincerity.
With only a few weeks to go, her campaign has to work quickly and decisively to dispel the doubts and build confidence in her leadership abilities.
It’s not impossible. But it has to be addressed immediately.
